If you have ever been to a children’s sports game, you know what happens. Whether it is soccer, hockey or basketball, most likely all you will see is a swarm. A swarm of eager young girls or boys all trying to get at the ball or puck. There is no rhyme or reason to how they are playing. There are no tactics, no strategies, no sense of where to go other than near the object they are trying to retrieve. Does that ever feel like your life? A constant running around with no clear strategy or goal? All you’re trying to do is make it to the end of the day so that you can do it all again. There are no plans – no plans to save for vacation or really connect and invest in a meaningful friendship. There is only chaos. What if it didn’t have to be like that?
What if you could gain clarity in your life? What if for the first time you felt like you were ahead of the curve instead of always feeling like your playing catch up? What if you could accomplish the things you have wanted to for days, months, years? Would you do it? Pete Carroll, head coach of the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks said, “Each person holds so much power within themselves that needs to be let out. Sometimes they just need a little nudge, a little direction, a little support, a little coaching, and the greatest things can happen.” You have the power within yourself to make things happen! Coaching is something that the greatest athletes and business professionals have benefited from for years. Steph Curry, 2-time NBA Champion and MVP has said, “To excel at the highest level – or any level, really – you need to believe in yourself, and hands down, one of the biggest contributors to my self confidence has been private coaching.” If the highest level athletes and business executives recognize the need for coaching why hasn’t the “everyman”?
Some may say that similar to counseling, there is a stigma attached to coaching. There may be a fear of seeming weak or frail, of being unable to get through life on your own. In actuality, strength comes from being humble enough to go against the grain and receive help. I guarantee that people will be more in awe of all you’re able to accomplish and your overall demeanor than they will be scoffing at your need for a coach.
For others, the concern may be that of finances. While this is fair, it begs the question, what price would you put on finally feeling the peace of knowing you have done and are being all that you can be? While it may be a bit of a tough pill to swallow up front, I am confident that the benefit will far outweigh the cost.
That being said, here are three reasons why coaches are effective and how they can help
- They tell you how it truly is: Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric said, “Does coaching work? Yes. Good coaches provide a truly important service. They tell you the truth when no one else will.” When everyone else is telling you what you want to hear, a good coach can give it to you straight and help you make wise decisions.
- Help you fulfill your potential: Bob Nardelli, former CEO of Home Depot said, “I absolutely believe that people, unless coached, never reach their maximum capabilities.” Coaches provide the motivation and accountability for you to accomplish things that you have been unable to on your own! It’s hard to beat the feeling of putting in the hard work and getting stuff done!
- A neutral sounding board: Instead of complaining to others or constantly being weighed down by unprocessed past events, you can bring them to your coach. Because you know they have your best interest at heart and will tell you how it truly is, you can rest assured that you are getting honest, helpful feedback. A good coach will help you get things off your chest that have been holding you back from being your best self so you feel energized and free to tackle all that life throws at you!
